One of the advantages golfers have in today’s golf environment is access to some of the best instructors in the world.
No longer do you have to rely on your local golf pro being able to help take your game to the next level. While there are some advantages to in person lessons, a lot of growth in a golf swing can take place from having a system and a solid understanding of that system.
Many golf instructors have turned to the internet to make a living and to connect with students. There are plenty of options in today’s golf world and the one we will review today is the Top Speed Golf by Clay Ballard.
He has quite a following on youtube and has a membership site that is very affordable that contains plenty of content.
Different instructors are good for different learners and golfers at different stages, but Clay Ballard is someone that I think can be helpful to a wide range because there is a system and a learning progression that he provides in his videos.

Top Speed Golf: Swing Approach/Philosophy
What I appreciate most about Top Speed Golf and Clay Ballard’s approach to teaching the golf swing is that hours of research and study has been completed and he has narrowed the greatest swings of all time to have 5 common moves. While some instructors might spend hours focusing on areas that are variable among the greatest try to teach “their system” Clay has reduced it down to 5 moves.
These 5 moves include:
- Stable & Fluid Spine
- Power Turn
- Top Speed Lag
- The Comprehension Line
- Straight Line Release
Each of these steps in his system have plenty of steps walking you through and improving your understanding and your ability to execute these moves. There is a great deal of content in each of these 5 areas as well as additional content to help you improve your speed.
One of his more popular courses include the 20 Minute Distance Fix.
Top Speed Golf: Does the Swing Philosophy of Clay Ballard Set Up for Quality Online Instruction
Some systems or philosophy might take more hands-on instruction, while others are set up for success with online systems. Overall, the approach of Top Speed Golf and Clay Ballard allows the golfer to understand and apply the system through online learning. Due to the 5 identifiable moves that he has established as key, the golfer is able to understand and then apply. A key part to any learning is feedback. A golfer can record his or her swing via their smartphone and see if it matches the areas Clay has identified in the videos.
Of course the golfer can learn and then apply and then review. He also offers “office hours” for members to ask questions of coaches involved with Top Speed golf. You can stop questioning if you are doing something right and instead receive the direct feedback you might need.
Top Speed Golf: Simplicity of Instruction – Is it Repeatable?
Yes, the swing is based on key moves and time is spent on the key moves that make the most difference. With anything in life, committing 90% of the time to what matters most is essential. Through this system, you won’t get lost in 500 different videos trying to get you to perfect the move. There are also different benchmarks to ensure you are progressing along with the system in place. Each of the 5 steps is broken down into 3 levels and at the end of each level there is a test to assess your progress before moving on.
Top Speed Golf: On Screen Personality
Clay is a quality communicator and quality golfer himself. It is always impressive to see the golf instructor make the swing he or she is teaching and trying to promote. As someone that tried to reach tour, but struggled with some speed, he is now here to help the amateurs play their best golf. He comes across as very genuine and authentic and has thought out the system he has created and continues to explore the best methods for the swing and the best way for golfers to learn.
Top Speed Golf: Quality and Quantity of the Content
If you really want the most out of Top Speed golf, you will more than likely have to buy the membership. While you can get plenty of free content on his youtube channel, most of it stops just short of providing the complete picture for you and often encourages you to dive deeper by signing up for a membership. We can appreciate this as the golf instructors need to make a living and his membership is very affordable.
Top Speed Golf: Online Instruction and Support – Further Content and membership
As I have mentioned several times, there is an affordable online membership that can be billed monthly or annually. He continues to update the content and has the complete program on the Top Golf System in addition to other courses and video. The 2nd most important class is the 20 Minute Distance Fix. Overall, there is plenty of content and the ability to move further for an increased amount of unlimited video review of your swing on a monthly basis.
Top Speed Golf: Overall Can Top Speed Golf Help My Game?
Yes, if you commit to the system and follow the videos step by step, you can get better. Trying to do everything on your own without a system is a recipe for disaster. Find a system and commit to it.

My Secret To Golf Improvement
Let’s face it, in order to get really good at golf, we must practice frequently. About four years ago, I made the leap and invested in a golf simulator build for my garage. I went with a SkyTrak Launch Monitor and the TGC software and can now play over 100,000 courses including Augusta, Pebble Beach, Bethpage Black, Whistling Straits. St. Andrews and many other of the top 100 courses in the world.
This golf simulator setup, which is more affordable that you might imagine, has been a game changer. I can now play golf everyday of the year regardless of rain, snow, cold weather or time of day. I can practice or play rounds of golf. I can stand in the 11th fairway at Augusta and with the auto-rewind feature I am able to practice my approach shots from various differences.
