No Turn Cast Drill: Review

We are all looking for that drill that is going to change our game.  Well, I think I may have found that drill to truly have an impact on the golf swing of many amateurs.  The drill is completely counterintuitive and makes no sense for those that have been trying to hold lag for the past decade.

You see, in the golfing world, we have heard about the importance of lag in the golf swing.  So naturally, everyone saw the still photos of the best golfers of all time and how much lag they had either right before impact or even after impact.

As a result, many amateur golfers started chasing this position in their golf swing.  There are countless youtube videos on how to hold the lag in your golf swing.  Training aids have been produced to help you get this feeling and people set out on their mission to get into this position in the golf swing.

However, something funny happened, golfers may have actually become worse.  The contact got worse, the ball striking and direction was miserable and golfers actually started to have less lag than before.

As the Iphone and other smartphones started to become more popular, most golfers have the ability to take a slow motion video from the caddie view of what is taking place in the golf swing.

Take the caddie view video of your swing and then compare to your No Turn Cast Drill swing video.

Golfers fell into the trap of trying to get this perfect position.

The reality is that lag is an effect not a cause.  This means that lag happens as a result of other things happening in the swing and isn’t something that you can cause.  You must be doing other positive things in the swing and the lag will happen.

On my golf journey, I have come across some of the best teachers online.  One of my top 5 is Monte Scheinblum.  He thinks completely out of the box and is  great communicator that actually knows how to fix the golf swing.  He truly understands the cause and effect nature of the golf swing and has many great drills for many of the common swing faults.

He ultimately tries to help the golfer build an efficient golf swing.  One that is reliable and easy to produce under pressure.

The ultimate drill for those struggling in having any kind of lag in the golf swing is a drill by Monte Scheinblum called the No Turn Cast Drill.

Below we will provide a complete overview on the many frequently asked questions surrounding this drill and lag in general in the golf swing.

These topics or questions include:

  • What is the No Turn Cast Drill?
  • Why does the No Turn Cast Drill work?
  • My personal experience!
  • Why is lag important in the golf swing?
  • What other wisdom does Monte Scheinblum have that might help your game?

What Is The No Turn Cast Drill?

The No Turn Cast Drill is exactly what the name says.  It is a drill where you are actually hitting a golf ball, but instead of trying to make a full turn and then hold your lag, like what you have heard for years on the different golf broadcast, you actually do the opposite.

You will try to not turn at all and then try to cast the club on the downswing.  I know what you are thinking, why the heck would I do that?  I have been told for years to make a quality turn and then try to get into those awesome positions that all of the professional golfers are in.  The reality is that the golf swing is a cause and effect reaction.

So here is what you should do to test this:

  • Take a caddie or side view video of your swing.  Take one in slow motion if you can.
  • Now, test the No Turn Cast Drill out.  Set up over the ball and try not to make a big turn and then cast the club from the top.  Make sure you capture this on video as well.
  • Compare the two videos side by side?

Do you see any difference?  For the majority of golfers, they will see that they actually have more lag in the second swing where they were trying to cast the club.  Most golfers are amazed at the difference and feel cheated over what they have been told for the past decade or so. They also realize that they took a full turn without worrying about taking a full turn.

Here is Monte explaining the drill:

Why Does The No Turn Cast Drill Work?

It works because lag is an effect that happens due to other causes in the golf swing.  Lag is actually produced from a throwing motion in the golf swing, not by holding off the release.

There is now some great wisdom being spread by golf instructors such as Shawn Clement, Monte Scheinblum, Mike Bender and Kyle Morris.  They understand that by throwing the club from the top, you are actually able to not only produce a much higher level of lag, but you will hit the ball straighter and further than ever before.

You see, you will start to utilize the speed in the right place and actually make an athletic motion in the golf swing.  Have you ever considered how you throw a baseball.  Do you intentionally hold the lag and not release the ball until the exact moment?  No, you reach back and fire the ball.

Or consider skipping a stone, this is actually my favorite swing though.  I picture that I am next to the river and have that side arm throwing motion with the right hand.  I take that stone back by my right shoulder and release that stone right across the water.  Same thing with my driver and irons!

I am thankful I have had access to Monte Scheinblum, Shawn Clement, Mike Bender and Kyle Morris along with Mike Malaska all through social media.  These five have helped revolutionize the game for us amateurs and have started to gather a following.

While all of them have different approaches and communication levels, they are rooted in my making an athletic, throwing like motion in the golf swing. Gone are the days of trying to hold onto something.  Take that club back, have your task in mind and throw it hard.

In today’s golfing world, we are fortunate to have access to some of the best golf instructors in the world.  Through social media we are no longer just stuck with whoever we have locally.

The golfing world is every changing and people are debating on the best ways to swing a club and we get to be right in the middle of it all learning as we go!

My Personal Experience

Three years ago I set out on a golf journey to play my golf ever, while having a ton of fun.  As a result, I purchased a golf simulator and set it up in my garage.  I dove in and started studying the best material I can find online related to the golf swing.

Interested in a Golf Simulator: Check out Rain or Shine Golf. Great packages and they even offer financing. It may cost less money that you anticipate!

I watched Shawn Clement, Bobby Lopez, Mike Malaska, Jim Venetos, Monte Scheinblum, Mike Bender and Kyle Morris.  I dove deep into the weeds to try to understand the golf swing.  I have tried many drills and watched hundreds of golf videos trying to understand what is going with the swing.

My main takeaway from years of studying and then practicing in my garage is that the golf swing is a throwing motion. That you will hit the ball further and straighter by having the Mike Austin type of throw from the top of the backswing.

Recently, through my training with SuperSpeed Golf and watching Mike Bender closely on Instagram, I have increased my swing speed on my driver from between 98-101 miles per hour to 104-107 miles per hour.

I am now carrying the ball around 260 and rolling out to 280 and I am only 5 foot 9 inches tall.  My main swing through is to skip that stone and throw it hard.  I want all of the energy and speed happening right at the ball and just beyond.

Earlier in my golf journey I was wasting speed in the right place and not reaching my full levels of speed by trying to hold on and be perfect.

You know, Ben Hogan said he wished he had three right hands.  Many speculate that he wanted to be able to throw and release the club hard with the right hand.  I know understand what this means!

Why Is Lag Important in the Golf Swing?

Lag helps produce the speed.  It creates the timing and speed that is needed to hit the ball far and on the start line that you want.  Think of whipping a towel.  The end of the towel whips through at the just the right time to create maximum speed.

This is the same in the golf swing.  The club head is the end of the towel and at just the right moment it whips through.  This is why for years people tried to hold the lag until the perfect moment.

The best video I can show you to help you understand this throw front he top is one by David Duval.

What other wisdom does Monte Scheinblum have that might help your game?

Monte is full of wisdom, he has great drills to help stop the early extension, which is where the hips move up and towards the ball too early.  He refers to this ias the dump, bump and turn drill.  Here is a full explanation, give it a shot as well:
