As golfers hit their 50s and 60s, many start to lose speed resulting in a loss of distance with all clubs.
This starts to impact the golfers ability to play their best. As a golfer loses speed, one club it becomes very noticeable with is the driver.
If you are hitting your driver 20-30 yards less than several years ago, it also means you have more than likely loss some distance with your irons, fairway woods and hybrids. This compounds the issue as now a 130 yard approach turns into a 160 yard approach, but you have to hit a hybrid or fairway wood into the green.
So what is the solution?
We believe the 3 steps below can send you on the right path to increased speed, longer drivers and shorter approach shots.
How to increase swing speed for seniors?
There are three key steps a senior golfer can take to increase speed. The first step is to train for speed using an overspeed system, stretching to increase flexibility and range of motion and finally a senior golfer must be able to control the low point of their swing and hit the center of the clubface.
Oftentimes it takes a strategic approach to improve and change anything with the game of golf. The battle with a loss of speed for senior golfers is that the speed can go away quickly. So intentionality with the training off season and during the season must be in place at a minimum to at least maintain your current speed and distance.
The three steps we will dive into with depth include:

Step #1: OverSpeed Training with SuperSpeed Golf
I spent many years wondering how I can increase my swing speed. When I was playing junior golf, we weren’t fortunate enough to have some of the training aids and knowledge that is now available. Smart people have studied the golf swing and have created training aids and protocols to help all golfers increase their distance!
At around the same time, the statistics from the PGA Tour have become more clear and the importance of speed is acknowledged by many to be a key to being the best on the PGA Tour.

Following their prescribed protocols the golfer completes the training every other day. The total time to complete most of their protocols is between 10-15 minutes. Most people can find the time to make this happen. The golfer will also need a swing radar to measure their progress.
The science behind the SuperSpeed Training System is based on overspeed training. Overspeed training has been around for several decades now and has been used by olympic athletics in the sport of Track and Field.

FAQ: Average Golf Swing Speed by Age?
Generally speaking, as someone reaches their 40s and their 50s, typically the golfer will start to lose speed if he or she is not training for speed. This loss in swing speed can be prevented from using overspeed training and staying in decent shape.
The most recent example of a golfer that has gained distance and swing speed when he reached 50 is Phil Mickelson. He was able to win the 2021 PGA Championship by leading the tournament in total driving distance.
You will often find his SuperSpeed Swing Sticks with him during his warm ups and during the practice rounds. Many golfers used to just settle for the loss of distance as they aged, but now there is hope for the future for these aging golfers.

Step #2: Stretching to increase flexibility
As golfers age and become senior golfers they also lose range of motion. This is a result of losing flexibility. Once again, the loss of your range of motion can be stopped and even reversed by following a strategic daily stretching plan to improve your overall flexibility resulting in a greater range of motion.
Included in this flexibility is the ability to balance yourself as well. The human mind is a powerful thing and if your brain signals that it feels unsafe swinging at certain speeds, your body will be limited in what speed it can produce overall. The range of motion and ability to balance oneself will have a negative impact on swing speed if you lack a wide range of motion and the ability to balance oneself at a higher swing speed.
The combination of overspeed training and flexibility/balance training can have a lasting impact on one’s ability to maintain speed at high levels or even increase speed!
There are many golf specific programs out there and other quality options that one could follow. The key is to actually follow a system and commit to flexibility and balance training at least 3-4 days a week.

Step #3: Controlling low appoint and center contact
It is one thing to be able to swing fast as a result of speed training and or flexibility and balance training, but if you can’t hit the center of the club face and control where the club strikes the ground, you are going to struggle to see quality results.
The best golfers in the world are able to control their low point in the swing with great precision. The worst golfers you will see might not strike the ground in the proper spot but maybe 1 out of every 4 attempts. This is why it is important to train this skill regardless of your current ability level.
Below are two excellent drills. The first is about controlling the clubface and where it interacts with the ground and the second drill is about creating a shot pattern that is predictable. The better your shot pattern, the more confidence you can have to really go at it with some extra speed.
The Drill: The Low Point Control Dril
- Take some yard paint and patina a 1-2 yard long line.
- Setup with 55% of your weight on your front side.
- Try to hit the target side of the line and see how many times out of 10 you can do this successfully!
- Repeat this drill every day for a month, tracking your progress and your ability to to this successfully in trials of ten.
- You may need to start with half swing and progress to full swings.
If you are struggling, put more weight forward and work on keep your head still to help control the low point in the swing.
The Drill: Stock Shot Drill
- At the driving range, set up an alignment stick about 6-8 yards in front of you, straight down your target line.
- If you have a second alignment stick, set the stick 3-4 feet right of the first stick (for a draw) or left of the first stick (for a fade).
- Complete your initial assessment see how many times out of 10 you can start the ball to the right or left of your target. Pick one side and measure your game at this point.
- The goal is to eventually get 7 out of 10 shots to start to the correct side and draw back towards the target.
