In an ideal world, we would all live really close to a golf course and have daily access to a driving range, putting green and the golf course.
The reality is that with our busy lives, we often cannot get to a course to work on our games to get better. This is where it becomes important to know how to get better at golf at home.
Here at golfjourney365, we love the challenge of playing our best golf and truly embracing the challenge that golf provides us both mentally and physically.
Golf is a magnificent game that provides a great deal of fun in our journey to get better and maximize our opportunities.
How To Get Better at Golf at Home?
We have found these 5 suggestions to be the key to getting better at golf at home.
- Swing Speed Training
- Working Out and Fitness Training
- Building a Golf Simulator at home
- Short Game work in the house or backyard
- Learn more about the Golf Swing Through Online Instructors
One of the areas that I focus on when trying to get better at golf is to look at the 3 fundamentals of golf to drive my practice routines and drills in everything that I do.
The Stack and Tilt Instructors said it best when they described what they believed were the fundamentals of golf. They explained it somewhat similar to this:
- Fundamental #1: The golfer’s ability to control the bottom of the golf swing. The best golfers will hit the ground in the intended spot, close to 100% of the time.
- Fundamental #2: The golfer’s ability to control the curve of the golf ball. The best golfers are able to start the ball to the right or left of the target line and have the ball curve towards the target without the ball over curving past the target.
- Fundamental #3: The golfer’s ability to have enough power to play the golf course. This means they are able to hit the ball far enough to play the course in regulation.
I use this as my assessment to see where I need to practice to get better. Was my struggles due to contact, control of the ball, lack of power or something connected with my short game.
Special Tip:
I believe that the short game is the ultimate equalizer if you are weak in one of the three areas, which is why you see one of our suggestions based on the short game work at home.
Suggestion 1: Swing Speed Training
Something we all want to do better is to hit the ball further. Does anyone ever feel like they hit the ball far enough?
Even though I have gained 10-20 yards in the last year, I would still like 10-20 more yards. One route that has worked for me that involved training at home is SuperSpeed Golf Training.
The speed training protocol involves using three different swing sticks that SuperSpeed Golf sells. The protocols are easy to follow and only take 10-15 minutes every other day. The results can be impressive with many golfers seeing at increase of 5-8% in their swing speed as early as the first training.

SuperSpeed Golf – Gain 5-8% more distance!

Overall, the SuperSpeed system is easy to use and brings about results. The training takes little time, is scientifically proven to work and can help golfers of all ability levels.
There is also some proof that the speed training can help improve mechanics, which would help with every fundamental in the golf swing.
Specially you would improve in fundamental #3. The evidence is clear on what extra distance does for approach shots and overall scores. It reduces the distance into greens, which improves your proximity to the pin, which results in more putts made and lower scores.

Suggestion 2: Working Out and Fitness Training
Golf has become more and more of an athletes game over the years. When Tiger Woods first burst onto the scene the professional golfers looked a bit different than they do today.
Tiger led the way with the importance of training for golf. Not only can it help you gain distance, but you can also possibly help prevent injury.
There are many quality options out there for fitness training related to golf. Depending on your current fitness level, I would recommend finding a solution that works best for you.
At a minimum a simple stretching program or getting involved in Yoga can go a long way in helping you perform better and/or prevent injury.
We all want to play golf as much as possible and staying safe and injury free is a great place to start. The ability to make your body stronger and more stable will benefit you in the short term and long term.
Golf is a life long game that we can all enjoy for many years. Start taking care of yourself today!
Suggestion 3: Building a Golf Simulator at Home
This is actually my number one recommendation! It is a complete game changer! While you might think it will cost you 30,000 dollars to build a home simulator, the reality is that you can build a high quality one for between 5,000 and 7,000 dollars.
The cost has reduced over the years as the technology has improved. Overall, you can play golf daily regardless of the weather, time of day or other factors that stop us.
I play 18 holes in around 40 minute and have now played over 700 rounds of golf on my SkyTrak Simulator.
The results have been a 4-6 shot decrease in average score and many hours of fun in my garage playing the best courses in the world on my TGC software that I run with my SkyTrak.
I get to play Augusta, Whistling Straits, Pebble Beach and many other of the top courses in the world.
Amazing Opportunities with SkTrak and TGC Software
The possibilities are endless and your game improvement is almost guaranteed to happen. All three fundamentals have an opportunity to improve as your ball striking, ball control and overall distance have a wonderful chance to improve.

Here are our top 3 recommended (more listed below):
If you want to jump right in, check out some of the packages at Rain or Shine Golf. They also offer financing to enable you to make monthly payments.
I know as a kid I often dreamed of a golf simulator and now that dream has become a reality! I get to play golf pretty much when I want, where I want. Many great times have been spent with family and friends and the fun never ends!
The feedback you receive from a SkyTrak golf simulator is key information to help you improve your ball striking and how you work the ball right to left or right to left. The ability to utilize that data and visualize the shot can be a key to helping you reduce your handicap.
Think about if you could play all winter at home how much better you will be when springtime arrives.
Also, if you are someone that only gets to play once or twice a week, being able to practice 2 to 3 times on those off days in your garage or your home will make a significant difference.
No longer will you feel lost on the first tee and spend 7 holes trying to figure out your swing!
Suggestion 4: Short Game work in the House or Backyard
I would highly recommend buying some ping pong balls and chipping them in your basement or living room. You can practice different chip shots without the fear of taking out a window or hurting someone.
Being able to hit 100 chip shots a day will drastically improve your short game. The great thing about the short game is that it doesn’t take great power or some genetic gift. Simply putting in the time with ever average technique can give you the feel that you need to reduce your scores.
Also working on those 4-10 footers on some flatter surface in your house could make a significant different. Think about if you speed train with suggestion number one and then work on your short game?
You will quickly see the results.
Consider this simple formula over 18 holes…
If you could just hit 6 out of 18 greens in regulation and average par on those holes. Take the other 12 holes where you didn’t hit the green and manage to get up and down 5 out of the 12 times.
This would leave you shooting a 7 over or somewhere close to 79. The majority of golfers can’t break 80, but you would reach that level!
Now if you could build a green in your backyard or have the golf simulator, you can get real life reps at your home, but even chipping the ping pong balls will payoff in the long run.
Those 4 to 10 footers are the key to even the professional golfers. These are the putts that can change a round of golf!
Suggestion 5: Learn more about the Golf Swing Through Online Instructors
One of the major benefits of playing golf in today’s world is the access to the best instructors in the world. Just 20 to 25 years ago, we did now have access to the world’s best instruction.
The world of instruction has come a long way as the swing has been studied using the high speed cameras we now all have access to in addition to the launch monitors that have become rather affordable.
Now you add in youtube and the willingness of many teachers to post instructional videos and the amount of information is endless.
Our recommendation is to check out our many reviews and figure out which system or person best fits your philosophy and communication style. There are some great instructors that we can all learn from.
I give a great deal of credit to the thousands of youtube videos I have watched over the years. I have learned a ton and with my golf simulator I have my own laboratory to try things about and get better!

Final Thoughts
Utilize the fundamentals of golf listed above and give yourself an honest assessment of where your game is at. Do you struggle to make solid contact? Do you struggle to know where the ball is starting and curving to? Do you struggle with enough distance?
Whatever your assessment turns out, look at the recommendations above and get to work to make your golf game better int he comfort of your own home.
The two game changes for my game as been the Golf Simulator in my garage and the SuperSpeed Golf System training. I also feel fortunate to live in today’s game and have access to many the awesome instructors that know the game at such a deep level!
