Your arms should be down at your sides, and your head should in a relaxed position looking at the golf ball. Your grip should be firm but not overly tight. You should also make sure to keep your elbows close to your sides to ensure a smooth swing.

Special Note: Do not stress about the following

  • Grip: There are great golfers that play with a strong grip and great players that play with a weak grip.  Get the club in your fingers and start working on your basic motion and striking the golf ball.
  • Overall Setup: Find a relaxed setup, take some video and compare to the best golfers using youtube. Some work in front of a mirror will go a long way in finding a comfortable setup.

Basics of the Golf Swing For The Beginner

Once you have the setup of your swing down, it’s time to start working on the basics of the swing. The golf swing is a complex motion, so it’s important to break it down into simple steps. The first step is to take your stance and focus on your balance. From there, you’ll want to pivot your body and shift your weight from your back foot to your front foot. 

As you do this, you’ll want to keep your arms close to your body and your head still. As you reach the top of your swing, your hands should be shoulder-level, and you should be looking at the golf ball.

If you want to maximize your distance, a quicker tempo actually produces more distance.  The old teaching of taking it back slow is bad advice.  Instead, keep the swing moving on both the backswing and the downswing.

3 Golf Swing Tips for Beginners

It is easy for the beginner golfer to get lost in a bunch of golf instruction and different theories.  We like to build our students around 3 key skills that we refer to as fundamentals.

We believe in building skill once you have the basics down.  These skills center around striking the ground at the low point in a consistent manner, having a predictable curve to your shot and having enough swing speed. 

Here are the 3 key fundamentals that the best golfers have mastered.

  • Low Point Control: Being able to strike the ball and then the ground in a consistent manner.
  • Stock Shot: Being able to start the ball on a predictable line with a predictable curve.  This helps you manage your way around a golf course.
  • Swing Speed: The golfer has to produce enough swing to play the golf course.  The more speed the quicker you will improve at the game.

Drills to Improve Your Golf Swing For Beginners

Once you understand the basics of the golf swing, you can start to work on improving your swing. There are a variety of drills that you can do to help improve your swing, and they can range from simple to complex. Here are some drills that are great for beginners:

Low Point Control Drill

  • Take some yard paint and paint a 1-2 yard long line.
  • Setup with 55% of your weight on your front side.
  • Try to hit the target side of the line and see how many times out of 10 you can do this successfully!
  • Repeat this drill every day for a month, tracking your progress and your ability to to this successfully in trials of ten.
  • You may need to start with half swing and progress to full swings.

If you are struggling, put more weight forward and work on keeping your head still to help control the low point in the swing.

Overspeed Training

We are big believes in the SuperSpeed Training system which is based on overspeed training.

The SuperSpeed Training System is based on three different swing speed sticks all weighing at different weights.  There is a green club that is 10% lighter than the average driver, the blue club which is 5% lighter and the red club which is actually 5% heavier!

Following their prescribed protocols the golfer completes the training every other day.  The total time to complete most of their protocols is between 10-15 minutes.  Most people can find the time to make this happen.  The golfer will also need a swing radar to measure their progress. 

The science behind the SuperSpeed Training System is based on overspeed training.  Overspeed training has been around for several decades now and has been used by olympic athletics in the sport of Track and Field.

Stock Shot in Golf

Here is a wonderful drill you can use to build a stock shot:

  • At the driving range, set up an alignment stick about 6-8 yards in front of you, straight down your target line.
  • If you have a second alignment stick, set the stick 3-4 feet right of the first stick (for a draw) or left of the first stick (for a fade).
  • Complete your initial assessment see how many times out of 10 you can start the ball to the right or left of your target.  Pick one side and measure your game at this point.
  • The goal is to eventually get 7 out of 10 shots to start to the correct side and draw back towards the target.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

When it comes to golf, there are a few common mistakes that beginners tend to make. One of the most common mistakes is swinging too hard. Swinging too hard can cause your shots to go off target and can lead to inconsistent results.

Another common mistake is not using your body correctly. You need to make sure that your body is in sync with your swing and that it is moving correctly in order to get the most out of your swing.

Additionally, it’s important to make sure that you are not gripping the club too tightly, as this can lead to a loss of power in your shots.

Other Tips to Improve Your Overall Game

Now that you know the basics of the golf swing and some common mistakes to avoid, it’s time to focus on improving your swing. Here are some tips that can help you improve your swing:

  • Take your time. Don’t rush your swing, as this can lead to inaccurate shots.
