Golf can be a complicated game, but there are some key steps to simplify the development of your golf swing and game.
Too many golfers can get lost in all of the little details of a golf swing, when they would be better off focusing on three drills to help them master the fundamentals of golf.
What are the fundamentals we are speaking of?
- Fundamental #1: Control the low point of the swing. The best golfers hit the same spot 99.9%. This leads to quality ball striking, which helps the golfer advance their game.
- Fundamental #2: Control the start line and the curve of the ball. The golfer that has a predictable start line and curve of the ball is able to manage their golf gam.
- Fundamental #3: Have enough speed to play the course. A lack of distance is a major issue that many golfers face.
So whether you are playing golf right handed or left handed, the key is to develop these three fundamentals. You must be able to strike the ball solidly, control the start line and curve of the ball and have enough distance to play the course.
The good news is that I have three excellent drills to help you develop your golf swing. Each of the drills specifically work on one of the fundamentals. I leave you at the end with a Bonus Drill and a recommended piece of Technology that is a game changer in today’s golfing world.
How to swing a golf club left handed?
The golfer must focus on low point control, the start line and curve of the ball and have enough speed to play the course. The fundamentals remain the same whether someone is golfing left handed or right handed. Focus on the three key drills to become an elite golfer.
Drill #1: Low Point Control Drill (Fundamental #1)
Whether you are a beginner or have been playing golf for 10 or more years, the drill below is excellent to really fine tune your low point control in your golf swing. You must be able to strike the ball and then the ground.
There is nothing worse in golf than a fat shot. While you can get away with a thin shot, ultimately for the best distance control, we want crisp, solid contact on every shot. The low point drill below helps you accomplish that goal.
- Take some yard paint and paint a 1-2 yard long line.
- Setup with 55% of your weight on your front side.
- Try to hit the target side of the line and see how many times out of 10 you can do this successfully!
- Repeat this drill every day for a month, tracking your progress and your ability to to this successfully in trials of ten.
- You may need to start with half swing and progress to full swings.
The quicker the golfer can learn to control his or her low point, the better the chance of striking the ball solid and on the center of the clubface. This leads to total distance, distance control and a feeling that keeps you working on your golf swing. Let’s face it, a well struck golf shot feels amazing! Hit more and you will want to practice forever!
Drill #2: Stock Shot Drill (Fundamental #2)
Once you have mastered the low point control, the golfer then wants to control the start line of the ball and the overall curve. COuld you imagine standing over a golf ball knowing that the ball was going to start slightly right and draw towards the target? This is the ultimate in being able to have control over your golf ball and develop a swing that is consistent.
If you have played golf with a consistent golfer, they more than likely hit the same shot shape over and over again. Their misses might be slightly left or slightly right or just a bit short, but they rarely have the round drestroging shot that hooks, slices or only travels 20 yards! Here we go, follow these steps for an awesome drill to continue the development of your left handed swing.
- At the driving range, set up an alignment stick about 6-8 yards in front of you, straight down your target line.
- If you have a second alignment stick, set the stick 3-4 feet left of the first stick (for a draw) or right of the first stick (for a fade).
- Complete your initial assessment see how many times out of 10 you can start the ball to the right or left of your target. Pick one side and measure your game at this point.
- The goal is to eventually get 7 out of 10 shots to start to the correct side and draw back towards the target.

The combination of solid contact (low point control drill) and the ability to hit a stock shot (consistent curve) is the first step in becoming a consistent golfer.
Drill #3: Speed Training (Fundamental #3)
Speed matters! The analytics are clear and you must be able to produce a decent swing speed to truly advance your game and lower your scores.
I spent many years wondering how I can increase my swing speed. When I was playing junior golf, we weren’t fortunate enough to have some of the training aids and knowledge that is now available. Smart people have studied the golf swing and have created training aids and protocols to help all golfers increase their distance!
At around the same time, the statistics from the PGA Tour have become more clear and the importance of speed is acknowledged by many to be a key to being the best on the PGA Tour.
Within the past several years, there have been several products hit the market to make speed gains possible. While many people for many years waited for the latest driver to come out to gain an additional 5-10 yards, you can now do this even with your current clubs.

Following their prescribed protocols the golfer completes the training every other day. The total time to complete most of their protocols is between 10-15 minutes. Most people can find the time to make this happen. The golfer will also need a swing radar to measure their progress.

My own experience has been an increase of 7-10 miles per hour on average from between 98-101 all the way up to 106-109. My goal is to hit the PGA Tour average of 113 mph in the coming months. I will continue to train every other day and watch in amazement as I am hitting drivers longer now than ever before!
Phil Mickelson (a senior golfer now) has been known to increase his swing speed in the past year or so and is close to 120 miles per hour in his swing speed. There are potential results for golfers of all ability levels and age!

BONUS Drill/Game: Simulated Course Drill
Here is a great drill to play at the driving range. It is one thing to control your low point or to hit your stock shot, but can you hit it under pressure? The best way to test this out if you can’t be on the course is at the driving range.
Here is how it works:
- You start at the first hole and let’s say it is a 405 yard par 4 with a hazard to the left at 220 yards, but a slight bailout area to the right.
- Set the parameters with different markers out on the driving range. Go through your pre-shot routine and see if you can hit the targeted area you are trying to hit.
- Based on that drive, let’s say you have 165 left to the green. Pull the appropriate club, set the target with some parameters and go ahead and make that shot as well.
- Keep track of how many times you can hit your targeted area. Over time track your progress and see if you are getting better during your practice rounds.
This is a great game to monitor your progress and to build some pressure situations while on the driving range. It sure is better than hitting 7 iron after 7 iron looking for the “secret” to the golf swing. Put yourself in those game-like situations and see if you can perform. You can always return to the stock shot drill if you lose your swing or aren’t hitting the shots that you need.
