Hitting the golf ball solid is a result of controlling the low point of the golf swing. The golfer that bottoms out too early and chunks the golf ball or lifts up and blades the golf ball is always going to struggle.
Special Note: The best golfers in the world are able to control their low point 99.9%, while a high handicap golfer might only control the low point around 25% of the time.
Sometimes in the game of golf, all we can ask for is to hit the ball solid.
If we could just head to the golf course every time knowing that we would hit the ball solid, it would remove stress and anxiety.
There are many golfers that would rather hit a golf ball solid, but end up 30 feet right of the pin vs hitting the ball sloppy, getting lucky and having it bounce to 10 feet.
The reality is that there is nothing like the feeling of the golf ball struck solid. All golfers are seeking consistency and the ability to hit the ball solid.
When a golfer is able to hit it solid, they can shift their focus to managing their golf game and their way around the course vs worrying about whether they are going to clear the water hazard.
How to hit the golf ball solid every time?
Update: We often start here with our students. The first fundamental in golf is to control the low point and hit the ball solid. Make sure you check out Step #1 below for the best drill that has worked for many!
There are some steps you can take to develop your golf swing to the point where you are hitting the ball solid over 90% of the time and work your way to the 99% range.
Here are some steps you can take to hit the golf ball solid every time:
- Use the low point control drill
- Follow an online golf instructor
- Practice the stock shot drill
- Focus on the target
- Practice everyday
Step #1: Use the low point control drill
Maybe the most important drill in all of golf, especially for the beginner or high handicap level golfers. This is the first fundamental in golf, the ability to control the low point.
The Drill: The Low Point Control Dril
- Take some yard paint and patina a 1-2 yard long line.
- Setup with 55% of your weight on your front side.
- Try to hit the target side of the line and see how many times out of 10 you can do this successfully!
- Repeat this drill every day for a month, tracking your progress and your ability to to this successfully in trials of ten.
- You may need to start with half swing and progress to full swings.
If you are struggling, put more weight forward and work on keep your head still to help control the low point in the swing.
This drill will help you control the low point and strike the ball solid. I would recommend using some wiffle balls in your backyard and completing this drill. Do it often. Try to do this drill everyday for 10 minutes for at least 1-2 weeks.
What you will find is that the better you can control the low point, the more solid your shots will be and you will gain confidence, directional control and distance control. You can start to map your bag and know how far your 8 iron truly flies because you will consistently strike the ball solid.
Step #2: Follow an online golf instructor
The great news for the golfer that loves the game is we now have access to the best golf instructors in the world. And there are some excellent golf instructors out there. Some of our top rated instructors include the following:
All of these instructors have helped plenty of students. . The advantage to following a golf instructor is you can have a system that you can implement. When you start to struggle, you can turn to the teacher for help either indirectly through videos or possibly with an online golf lesson.
The bottom line is that you need a system to follow for the type of golf swing that you will use. Sticking to the system will help you in the long term and help you arrive at a consistent swing. All of the instructors above are different from each other, but have a system that might be right for your game!
I think by checking out the swings in this post below, you will see it is about finding a system that works for you:

Step #3: Practice the stock shot drill
What we find in the game of golf is that when our swing path and our clubface have too large of a gap, not only do we over-curve the ball, but we can struggle to hit the ball solid. The ball flight laws taught us plenty about the curve of the ball. We need to be able to hit a slight draw or a slight fade. Ocne that draw turns into a hook shot or the fade turns into a slice, the solid nature of the golf shot starts to disappear and frustation creeps in.
When we combine the low point control drill with the stock shot drill, we are cover 2 out of the 3 key fundamentals in the game of golf: the ability to control the low point and the ability to control the start line and curve of the ball.
Once we can swing the club without speed to play the course, we have met all three fundamentals in the golf swing.

Step #4: Focus on the target
Too often we can get stuck trying to hit at the ball instead of swinging down the fairway towards the target. This often results in an early casting of the club, leading to poor compression and making all shots feel like they lack any solidness in the shot.
The best instructor at teaching golfers to swing naturally and towards the target is Shawn Clement. He is one of a kind instructor that is great for the game of golfers. He is awesome with all levels of golfers, but especially the beginner golfer who needs a solid motion through the shot.

Step #5: Practice everyday
Unfortunately, there are no shortcuts to the game of golf. We must put int he time, but we want to spend the time wisely. The multiple drills and mindsets above will get you headed in the right direction and ensure you are working on the right things and spending your potential limited time in the right areas.
I am a big believer in feedback.
All good learning starts with the proper feedback. Too often in golf, we are guessing about what took place in the golf swing. There are two pieces of technology that have been game changers in the past decade that every amateur can now have access to. These include:
- The built in camera on a smartphone
- A portable launch monitor.
The camera can be your extra set of eyes and the portable launch monitor can give you the following after every shot:
- Carry and Total Distance
- Spin Rate
- Launch Angle
- Spin Axis
- Ball Speed
You don’t have to spend a ton of money for a portable launch monitor. I would highly recommend the Skytrak Launch Monitor from Rain or Shine Golf. This affordable launch monitor can be a game changer for you. Several years ago, I built a golf simulator space in my garage and have now played over 800 rounds. My scores have decreased to the level of being near scratch as a golfer during the summer months.
Whether you use it with a net at home, at the driving range or as part of a golf simulator you can have the information at your fingertips to get better! Pair the Skytrak with the drills and follow an online system and there is a great chance you will improve! Ultimately, you have to put in the time, but maximize your time and effort with the right technology tools available in today’s game! Have fun while you are at it!
